It’s no lie that the Brisbane skate scene has always had a multitude of skate crews from generation to generation.

The Bay, Washed Mafia, Paddo crew and Dangerous Posse to name a few… and then there’s us, the most recent on the scene, the Hype Squad. While all these crews are doing their own thing and have their own vibe, we are all united and quite often, regardless of this clicked out city it’s not uncommon to find ourselves in crazy 20 people deep sessions.

The majority of us grew up skating and filming together in a small town about an hour north of Brisbane called Caboolture. Around 2012 I scored every young skateboarders “dream job” of working in a skate shop (Skatebiz) and from there I started to meet Brisbane skateboarders/legends, most of whom we saw in magazines, videos and in some cases pretty much idolised. The question ‘Who do you skate with?’ was asked of me almost everyday and my answer was always met the same blank face reaction after naming names. One day out skating I proposed the idea of sporting a title in hopes it made it easier to answer that previous question. I don’t exactly remember how the name ‘Hype Squad’ came about but I guess you can base it off the excitement we get and still do get, from skating and everything about it.

After Jesse had tried this numerous times with the boys heckling from the side-lines, the cops rolled up. Even they joined in the heckling with one of them saying “Fuckin go on then, let’s see it!” The heckle from a 5-0 was enough to psych him to get the make and roll away, sending the squad into a frenzy of… HYPE.
