A new video from Loaded. Here's what Adam Colton had to say about it.
Nestled in the traffic and craziness of Hollywood CA, lies a nice quiet hill waiting to be skated. James Kelly and I, Adam Colton, captured this experience.
This video was shot with a Canon 7D, Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 and a Canon L-series 50mm f1.2 lens.
In the video I focused on simple smooth camera work--not so much to distract from the skating but to add some simple movement to the shots. The follow shots in the video were particularly fun. Following James down the first part of the video through all the turns was a challenge and turned out sweet. Hurray for not getting hit by cars.
SLO-MO
I shot a bunch of the video at 60fps using the Canon 7D. For some of the slow mo stuff I had my shutter at 60 and for others I had it at 120. I find that having your shutter at 120 makes for a more fluid and smooth slow motion image. I just got to remember to set it to 120, hahaha.
The slow motion really works well with the music and lets you focus on the fine details of the slide. I particularly like the shot where I pan down from the Lions head to show James doing a huge drawn out backside or the close up follow shots at the end to focus on James upper body movement.
I feel this video really captures the diversity of the Dervish and the diversity of James’ skating. Being a well-rounded skater is an important achievement that I think is often overlooked.
A video can only be as good as its subject and I am stoked James came out and killed it each day; always eager to go back up the hill for another go.
JAMES KELLY’S THOUGHTS
For me this video started with an email from Adam saying “We are doing a video with just you baby! What do you want to capture?” As I read this my face lit up. To be in one of Adams videos is a dream come true for any longboarder. To work 1 on 1 with Adam for a 2 day project would send any skater into a state of euphoria. After I gathered myself the next thought on my mind was where in LA should I skate?
Mt. …. , I mean the hill we skated, (sorry hill must remain unnamed) quickly popped to mind. Mt. ……. is a very unique spot in Hollywood with some of the steepest and widest urban terrain we know of. From the first moment I saw Mt….. I was dieing to film there, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Filming with Adam is always so much fun! It’s so entertaining to see him get all excited and worked up about the shots and ideas that fly through his head. Filming was full of hiking, which we longboarders are used to, so that was fine. The hardest thing about the filming was trying to skate next to Adam, literally 2 feet from me holding a crazy nice camara, as I am trying to throw 180s all over the place. I was very happy to do it, but after seeing the shots he got and how close he was able to get I was so stoked and so amazed. After the filming we both sat down for sushi, very excited for the video.
MUSIC
Special thanks to the Balkan Beat Box and JDUB records for the rights to use this sick song. Tomer, Tamir and Ori of Balkan Beat Box will all be skating Dervishes soon enough and we hope they’ll be ripping in a future video, not just providing the music.
